Ambitious Pioneer for Open Science: These are the top Priorities at the EOSC Association

The European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) is a key strategic instrument of European science policy. In the ZBW podcast „The Future is Open Science“ (German language), Prof. Dr. Klaus Tochtermann talks about his goals as the newly elected president of the EOSC Association. He emphasises why the coming years will be decisive in determining whether Europe can maintain its lead in the interlinking of research data.

There are three main challenges: sustainable funding after Horizon Europe expires in 2027, new governance structures for greater agility – and, last but not least, the integration of very heterogeneous stakeholders from an extremely diverse research landscape. Ultimately, the better the interests of universities, research institutions and infrastructure facilities, and research funders are represented and coordinated, the more effectively the EOSC can function as the voice of science.

From a technological perspective, the focus lies on establishing the ‘EOSC Federation’ as a robust infrastructure: a federated network of European research data repositories that brings together data across disciplinary boundaries. Initial use cases demonstrate the added value this linkage creates for research.

Internationally, the EOSC is already considered a role model. If you want to know how Open Science is being implemented in everyday research in Europe – and what role guidelines, training and policy strategy papers play in this – you should listen to the new podcast episode.
